A hosting plan advertised per month may require payment for several years upfront. Treat the contract length and total due today as primary numbers. Next, find the renewal price and the features that expire after a promotional period.
Calculate the amount due today
For an illustrative $3-per-month offer requiring 48 months upfront, the base payment is $144 before extras or taxes. That is different from being able to pay $3 each month. If the renewal rate were $8 per month, the annual equivalent after the offer would be $96. These figures are examples, not a current hosting quote.
A three-year planning calculator that annualises costs does not fully model cash flow for a four-year prepaid contract. Keep a separate note of the upfront payment and commitment length. Do not compare a monthly cancellable plan with a multi-year deal as though the commitments were identical.
Ask what your specific site needs
- A compatible PHP version and database if your application uses them.
- HTTPS certificate installation and renewal.
- Backups, retention and an explained restore process.
- Enough storage, database capacity and resource limits for your workload.
- Scheduled tasks if you intend to publish automatically.
- Support for connecting a domain registered elsewhere.
Unlimited is not a performance measurement
A plan's storage or bandwidth label does not tell you its CPU, memory, concurrent process or fair-use limits. Ask for those limits if the site needs frequent background tasks. Test with your actual application before assuming that a shared account can run persistent software or video processing.
Buy for the first useful release
List the features you will actually launch. A content site with simple browser calculators has a different workload from an online store or video-processing service. Compare total ownership cost, support and recovery options, then pick a plan that meets that workload. Save your provider's renewal figures and review them ahead of the next bill. Do not base a multi-year commitment solely on a countdown or a percentage-off badge.
