How our tools work

Simple formulas, visible assumptions and source links you can check.

Website budget

Year one = domain registration + annual hosting + (monthly mailbox cost × mailboxes × 12) + annual extras + one-time setup. Years two and three replace introductory domain and hosting prices with annual renewal figures and exclude setup. The optional tax multiplier is applied to all costs uniformly. Three-year total = year one + year two + year three. Monthly average = total ÷ 36.

All amounts are USD. Currency conversion, inflation, usage overages and changing mailbox counts are not modelled. This is an annual cost model: a provider may require several years of payment upfront. Default numbers are illustrative and are not market averages or vendor quotes.

Domain comparison

Total = first-year registration + annual renewal × (years − 1). The listed selection covers standard, non-premium .com registrations. Spaceship and Namecheap include an added $0.20 annual ICANN fee in our calculations; Porkbun lists its fee-inclusive prices. Taxes and optional services are excluded. We do not apply Namecheap’s new-customer coupon. The table is sorted by calculated total, not by service quality.

Prices were checked on 17 September 2026 against Spaceship, Porkbun and Namecheap. Always confirm current fees, exact domain availability and renewal terms at checkout.

Email comparison

For each plan: monthly per-mailbox price × number of paid mailboxes × 12 × years + one-time setup. The difference is the absolute difference between the two totals. Prices, mailbox counts and plans remain constant throughout the comparison. Taxes are excluded. Equal totals are reported as equal; no winner is invented.

Additional planning tools

Hosting costs apply the introductory rate to the covered months and the renewal rate to remaining months, plus setup. Maintenance separates cash allowances from the value of work hours. Project quotes combine work hours and direct costs before adding contingency. Page transfer uses MB per view × monthly views ÷ 1,000, then adds an optional margin. Each tool documents its exclusions alongside the result.

Hosting plan comparison

Each three-year total is first-year hosting + two annual renewals + three annual extras. The signed difference is Plan A minus Plan B. Scope, capacity and support must be checked separately; a cheaper total does not establish better quality.

Website enquiry break-even

Expected sales needed = monthly website cost divided by contribution per completed sale. Expected enquiries = expected sales divided by the enquiry-to-sale rate, rounded up. Contribution excludes variable fulfilment costs. A fractional sales result is a long-run average, not a promise of a completed sale. Zero or negative contribution and conversion rates outside (0, 100] are rejected.
