Do you need to pay extra for an SSL certificate?

Check whether your host already includes automated HTTPS before buying an optional certificate.

A basic website can often use a no-charge certificate with automated renewal. Let's Encrypt is one option supported by many hosting workflows. Whether installation is included and maintained depends on your provider, so check the hosting package before buying a separate certificate.

A certificate is one part of security

HTTPS protects traffic between the browser and the server when correctly configured. It does not prove that the business is trustworthy, fix vulnerable software or replace backups. A paid certificate also does not remove the need for updates, strong admin authentication and careful access control.

Verify the complete connection

Open the exact public hostname you intend to use. Check that the browser reports a valid certificate and that its name matches the domain. Test the www address if visitors may use it, and confirm that HTTP redirects to the preferred HTTPS address. A setting labelled SSL enabled is not, on its own, evidence that the correct certificate has been issued.

What to ask your host

  • Is certificate issuance included for my domain?
  • Is renewal automatic, and how are failures reported?
  • Which hostnames are covered?
  • Does HTTPS serve the same application files as HTTP?
  • Is a redirect to the canonical HTTPS address configured?

Common setup problems

A newly connected domain may still point to a previous server on some networks. A certificate may cover the bare domain but not www. Some panels use separate directories for HTTP and HTTPS. Diagnose the specific problem before repeatedly ordering new certificates.

If your host supports automatic issuance, follow its documented process and test the public result. Keep renewal notices visible. For a business with special contractual or validation requirements, confirm those requirements separately; the cheapest certificate is only appropriate when it satisfies the actual use case.
