A cheap domain today can cost more at renewal

Compare the first three years, understand mandatory fees and avoid paying for a domain you cannot easily move.

Compare a domain's first-year price and renewal price together. A discount can be a sensible purchase, but it does not tell you the ongoing cost of owning the name. Premium names, taxes and promotions can also change the amount shown at checkout.

Compare equal periods

For a three-year comparison, add one registration and two renewals. A fictional offer charging $2 initially and $25 at each renewal totals $52. Another charging $12 every year totals $36. The second is $16 cheaper over that period even though its first-year price looks less attractive.

Our domain comparison tool shows published standard .com prices for a small selection of registrars, alongside source links and the date checked. It is not a live availability search or a complete market survey. Recheck the exact name at checkout, particularly if it is described as premium.

Keep fees visible

Some registrars include mandatory fees in their headline price; others list them separately. Compare the same tax treatment and avoid counting an included fee twice. Domain privacy, email and hosting are different products. Check which are included, optional or discounted only temporarily.

Make sure the account belongs to you

Register in an account you control, with accurate contact information and a recovery email you can access independently of the new domain. Save the receipt and use two-factor authentication where available. Record the renewal date. Auto-renew can help, but an expired card or failed payment still needs attention.

Choose the name before the promotion

A readable, easy-to-spell name you can use for several years is usually more useful than a confusing alternative purchased solely for a discount. Avoid names that suggest another company's identity. If you already own a suitable domain, an extra extension is an optional business decision, not a technical requirement for launching a website.

Before buying, confirm the full first-year charge, ordinary renewal, account ownership and DNS controls. Save the provider's current terms with your purchase records.
